Kit & Caboodle emerged out of the Belgian squat scene with a fusion of old-time stringband music and a crustpunk lifestyle. Based in Ghent, the duo steeps their music in lived experience: singing with queer witches in midwinter hotspring on the olympic peninsula, almost getting trampled by wild stallions to get their mares back from the native lands near penticton, coming of age with catholic workers deep in algonquin, spending a year up a tree near bruges to keep a forest from being cut down, learning the banjo and dropout culture on the gulf islands... nights spent riding trains, months in squats, years moving through Europe's anarchist circuits. Their sound breathes deep into Appalachian roots music... the modal simplicity, the ache, the danceability... but channels it through a sensibility forged in direct action and persistent vagabondage.
The band's core lineup features Steven Andsowon (guitar, banjo, vocals) and Florene Vandecasteele (violin, backing vocals), a partnership that emerged out of a broken marriage. They sing of mountain spirits, untouched forests, the specific pain of perpetual departure, and the highs and lows of a life lived outside mainstream structures.
Kit & Caboodle have built a touring presence across Europe's folk and roots circuit, appearing at festivals including Dranouter, Labadoux, Muddy Roots, and Gentse Feesten. They've shared bills with artists including Holy Locust, Richard Thompson, IV and the Strange Band, and Willy Tea Taylor... a lineup that speaks to their credibility within both the Appalachian folk underground and the broader roots-punk ecosystem. Their mission is deliberate and pointed: to make you dance with your pain. Their ethos rejects the romance of destruction in favor of the harder work of solidarity and witness. As they put it themselves, it's better to jump on a train than under one. They're currently based out of Ghent, Belgium, and continue to tour European squat networks, festivals, and venues that value artists who've actually lived the stories they tell.
